The HP EliteBook 840 G3 may seem like an old laptop that won’t be able to keep up with today’s requirements. After using this laptop for about 5 months I can honestly say you might be partially wrong.

This detailed review of the HP EliteBook 840 G3 will give you an overview of its features and performance in 2023. Read on to find out if it could be the perfect fit for you!

Overview of the HP EliteBook 840 G3

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14” notebook featuring a sleek and professional design. It has an all-aluminum finish, which gives it a high-end look. The laptop weighs only 1.48 kg, making it highly portable for those who are always on the go.

The laptop is powered by an Intel Core i7 processor, 8 GB of DDR4 RAM, and a 256 GB SSD. The combination provides the laptop with enough performance to handle most daily tasks without any issues. On top of this, it also features integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 for casual gaming or video editing needs.

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 also includes a host of connectivity options, such as USB Type-C, HDMI, and USB 3.0 ports. It is equipped with Windows 10 Pro preloaded, so you can get right to work without any additional setup.

Performance in 2023

In terms of performance in 2023, the HP EliteBook 840 G3 shines. I have the i7-6600U variant, which gives me an advantage over the i3 and i5 variants, but the difference in performance won’t be significant.

Additionally, my variant comes with 8 GB RAM (Upgradeable to 32GB) and 128 GB SSD (Upgradeable to 512GB).

The laptop also has a variant with HDD as its storage which can go up to 1TB.

It easily handles daily tasks like web browsing, programming, and watching videos without any issues. Multi-tasking and running multiple programs was not a problem either as the laptop remained responsive even with several applications open at once.

I have also tried using dozens of tabs in multiple users of Chrome along with other applications, and it was running almost fine.

I wasn’t surprised that the laptop’s graphics performance wasn’t impressive since it’s a 7-year machine with Intel integrated graphics. I already knew it wouldn’t be impressive.

I have tried using Photoshop for basic photo editing and Filmora for video editing on this laptop, and the performance was satisfactory. I did not experience any lag, and the software worked smoothly. However, it will struggle to handle advanced editing tasks.

Bonus: You can also use windows 11 on this laptop.

Summary
The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a great laptop for everyday and basic to medium-level tasks.

It can handle activities like web browsing, document editing, and light photo/video editing with ease. It also has no problem while multitasking.

However, don’t expect too much performance from this machine. It might be able to handle some medium-level tasks, but you will definitely start to see it struggle.

Design and Portability

When we talk about the latest EliteBook 840 G series, the design has changed much. Of course, there are differences, but the old G3 still looks pretty similar when compared to the latest ones.

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 has a sleek aluminum finish that makes it look premium. It also weighs only 1.48 kg and is fairly thin, making it very portable.

I think the laptop is great because it’s both lightweight and well-built. The fact that it’s lightweight makes it easy to carry around and its sturdy aluminum build not only looks nice but also provides better protection for the screen compared to a laptop with a plastic casing.

Connectivity

I found the connectivity options to be adequate for my needs and most people would find the same, as it has all of the commonly used ports and slots.

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 includes a selection of ports, including:

  • 1 USB 3.1 Gen 1 charging
  • 1 USB 3.1 Gen 1
  • 1 USB Basic Type-C
  • 1 DisplayPort
  • 1 VGA
  • 1 RJ-45/Ethernet
  • 1 Docking connector
  • 1 Headphone/microphone combo
  • 1 External SIM
  • 1 Smart Card Reader

The VGA port helps if you got an old monitor which doesn’t support DisplayPort and If you need more ports, you can always connect a docking connector.

The external sim and smart card reader can also come in handy.

The laptop also has 802.11 ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2 support, so you can stay connected anywhere with no issues at all.

Display

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is equipped with a 14-inch full HD IPS display. The display is bright and crisp, with good viewing angles.

I have used the laptop in different lighting conditions and I found it to be quite good for general usage. However, if you want to do some serious photo or video editing, then you will want a better display.

The display also has anti-glare protection, which helps to reduce the amount of glare on the screen when working in bright light.

Summary
Some variants of the laptop also come with 1440p resolution which would definitely provide better quality than my 1080p display. Overall, its display is quite good and justifies its price but it’s definitely not for professional use.

Battery Life

HP claimed up to 13 hours of battery life when this device came out. It has a 3-cell battery (46WHr).

I found the battery life to be just fine. It should be noted that this is a 7-year-old device, so its battery might probably be degraded too much or replaced with a cheaper one.

I have mostly been getting between 2 to 4 hours of battery life with the HP EliteBook 840 G3 depending on my usage. If I’m doing simple tasks like web browsing or document editing, I can usually get up to 3 to 4 hours.

However, if I put more load onto it such as heavier photo or video editing, then the battery life will drop significantly even below 2 hours.

Summary
Overall, the battery life of the HP EliteBook 840 G3 is decent but not great considering its age. It should get you through a few hours of work without any issues. But if you’re looking to get more out of your laptop then you might want to look elsewhere.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 features a Spill-resistant backlit keyboard. It has a good amount of travel and is quite comfortable to type on, but it does have a bit of flexing when pressed.

The touchpad gets the job done, but it is a bit small and not very comfortable for prolonged use. I mainly used it with a mouse. Nevertheless, it is responsive and has multi-touch gestures such as scrolling and zooming.

Temperature and Noise

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 runs pretty quietly. When idle, it is nearly silent and when under load, it doesn’t make too much noise. So, in terms of the noise of fans, this laptop passes the test.

Temperature-wise, the laptop does get warm but nothing too bad. The keyboard area gets a bit hot in intense use but the palm rest stays at a comfortable temperature.

I didn’t get any overheating or thermal issues. The laptop runs cool and even under intense load, it doesn’t get too hot and the performance also stays consistent.

Speakers

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 speakers are located above the keyboard. The sound quality is ok but nothing to write home about. Bass and treble are lacking, so you may need external speakers if you want decent audio quality. Additionally, the speakers aren’t loud enough.

The microphones also deliver just a normal performance, clear but not extraordinary audio recording.

While the quality of the speakers could have been better, Hey, I’m not complaining since you don’t really expect much speaker quality at this price point.

Security

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is equipped with a fingerprint reader, which adds an extra layer of security.

However, my model’s fingerprint wasn’t working. But HP laptops have almost the same type of fingerprint across their devices, and they work fine.

In addition, it also comes with TPM 1.2 for encryption purposes which helps protect your data from any potential threats. The laptop also has a Kensington Lock if you want to use it.

Webcam

The webcam on the HP EliteBook 840 G3 is nothing exceptional. It offers 720p video resolution and can record at 30fps which should be good enough for basic video calls. The image quality also isn’t too bad, not grainy or blurred in any way.

Overall, it’s sufficient for casual use but if you’re looking for something better then you should consider an external webcam.

Pros & Cons of Using the HP EliteBook 840 G3

Pros:

  • Good performance for the price
  • Metallic Build
  • Light-weight
  • Spill-resistant keyboard is quite comfortable for typing.
  • Runs cool and noise-free
  • Has a fingerprint reader & encryption features for extra security

Cons:

  • The small touchpad & speakers are not loud enough
  • Only 2 to 4 of battery life

Is the HP EliteBook 840 G3 Right for You?

hp elitebook 840 g3 laptop

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a great laptop for everyday use. The performance is good enough to handle most tasks. The security features are also nice additions as it helps keep your data safe from any potential threats.

However, if you do more intense tasks you may want to look for a different laptop. Also, the speakers and touchpad aren’t the best. The battery life is also not great. So if these are important features for you then you should consider other options.

Overall, it’s a great choice if you’re looking for a used low-range laptop that can handle everyday tasks with ease. The metallic build quality along with its portability is another positive thing to consider.

Conclusion

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 laptop is a great choice for everyday use, with good performance and security features.

It has a metallic build quality, a lightweight design, and a spill-resistant backlit keyboard that makes it comfortable to type on. The laptop runs cool and noise free so you don’t have to worry about overheating or thermal issues.

However, the speakers are not loud enough, the touchpad is small and the battery life isn’t too impressive either.

Overall, this laptop might be worth considering if you’re looking for an affordable used laptop that can handle basic tasks without any problems but may not be suitable if you need something more powerful or feature packed.
